One of Britain’s largest volunteering charities is urgently calling for volunteers to come forward to support people living with dementia in South Wales.

In Brecon, Cwmbran, Mountain Ash and Newbridge, more people are needed to volunteer with Royal Voluntary Service’s dementia services, to support as many people in the areas as possible.

Volunteer help is needed in roles across the charity’s Memory Lane Dementia Cafés. These services are a fundamental part of the lives of the people that attend, offering them the support they need to live happy, healthy and full lives whilst staying connected to the things they love and their communities.

Local people with dementia and their carers can come along the cafés to take part in stimulating actives such as quizzes, singalongs, music-making and information sessions. Those who attend are also able to enjoy free hot drinks and biscuits in the company of friends and receive advice and support where needed.

Volunteers are needed to support the weekly café sessions in Brecon, Cwmbran, Mountain Ash and Newbridge, in roles such as helping with refreshments or activities, greeting visitors or helping out with the service’s admin tasks.

In addition to volunteers, Royal Voluntary Service is also encouraging people living with dementia and carers who are looking to connect with their local community, to reach out to their local service.

Jennifer Rees, service manager for Royal Voluntary Service Memory Lane Cafés in Wales, said: “The people that come along to our cafés are often telling us that they don’t know what they’d do without out support.

“As well as providing practical help, our cafés boost social connectivity, health and wellbeing. So we are eager to welcome as many people as we possibly can.

“If you or someone you know is living with Dementia and would benefit from support, we would love to hear from you.

“Or if you have any time to spare and are interested in joining our team of amazing volunteers, not only will you be making a huge difference to people affected by dementia in your community, but our roles are so rewarding that you’ll feel great about it too.”
