A brand new Co-op store in Talgarth opened to the public today (Friday, September 15).

The relocated store has been built on the site of a former Powys County Council Highways depot on the A4078 on the entrance into the town.

The new store replaces the old Co-op store that was situated in Liverpool House on The Square in the centre of the town which has now been closed and vacated.

Starting in early December 2022, the relocation project was recently completed, bringing a larger, more modern store to residents of Talgarth with more parking spaces available.

The ribbon was cut around midday to mark the occasion, and was met by a cheer from those in attendance.

Commenting on the opening of the new Talgarth Coop, William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth, said: "For decades, the site of this new store, the former Powys Highways Yard, has stood in dereliction and it is great to see this impressive new Coop store at the heart of its regeneration, as part of the wider redevelopment of the Eastern gateway to Talgarth.

"There is now an opportunity - and an urgent need - to bring investment into the former store, at Liverpool House on The Square. This,  subject to planning permission, will bring new retail opportunities, faithful to the history of our town, together with above the shop living space, to bring additional vitality.

"But that's for tomorrow. Today, I was delighted to call in, alongside our neighbouring County Councillor, Gareth Ratcliffe, to wish Will and his Coop team all the best, as they embark on their new journey."

Look out for the full story coming next week.
