A VILLAGE school celebrated its 40th anniversary in style last week with a garden party and the unveiling of a stunning mosaic made up of tiles designed by every pupil.
The ceremonial revealing of the mosaic at Llangynidr Community Primary School on September 8 marked the exact anniversary of the opening of the school building on September 8, 1976, after staff and pupils relocated from an old building in the village.
The mosaic was created by parent Anna Lawday who oversaw the design of the specially-glazed clay tiles designed by pupils which now sits proudly in a frame at the school entrance. The art project was also supported by Pat Cook of Take pART in Brecon and the bespoke metal frame for the mosaic was provided by Black Mouain Fabrications.
The artwork was proudly unveiled by former deputy head teacher (and acting head at the time the new school opened) Linda Games, pictured, from Llangynidr.
She said: “I’m very proud to have been asked to unveil the mosaic today. I’ve been through every stage at Llangynidr School from pupil, to teacher and now governor. I think the school does a wonderful job as it has done for generations of pupils from the village and I think the current headteacher Karen Jenkins does an outstanding job.”
The garden party ahead of the mosaic unveiling was organised with help from Year 6 pupil Lily Bignell, above. The whole school sang in addition to the choir and there were two drama performances by pupils.
Other special guests included former headteacher at the time the new school opened Craig Rees and former teachers including Val Ware and Annette Vale, as well as current staff at the school. There was also a display of old photographs of the school throughout the years and current Year 6 pupils offered guided tours for garden party guests.
The current head teacher Karen Jenkins, pictured, said: “I was so proud of the pupils for the effort they made in creating such a beautiful artwork which will be there for future generations to see. It has been a privilege to lead the school since 2014.
“There is such a wonderful spirit here and we have amazing support from parents, governors and the village community. Here’s to another 40 successful years,” she added.
