The long-awaited re-opening of Llandrindod Repair Café will take place in February.
The café will operate a Covid-safe drop-off service at the Hive (South Crescent, corner of Middleton Street and Temple Gardens, Llandrindod), from 2pm to 5 pm on February 12 and thereafter on the second Saturday of each month.
To protect the health of Repair Café volunteers, visitors will be expected to wear a face mask.
Items can be collected on the second Saturday of the following month, or by arrangement with the Fixpert.
Each visitor can bring a maximum of two items per session, and that large items (e.g. bicycles, lawnmowers) cannot be accepted at present.
As before, there is no charge for the Repair Café (except for the cost of replacement parts), but donations to cover expenses are gratefully accepted.
The Repair Café team plans to hold repair events at the Celf Centre, Llandrindod, when it is safe to do so.
Martina Holmes, one of the Repair Café organisers, said:
“We’d like to thank all our visitors for bringing their faulty household goods and trying to get them fixed instead of mindlessly dumping them.
“Our little Repair Cafe is a tiny rebellious act in a vast world of waste and consumerism, but it is part of a growing movement worldwide and attitudes are changing. So, let’s all keep recycling and repairing as much as we can!”
Llandrindod Repair Café is the longest-running Repair Café in Wales.
The popular café has been unable to operate during the Covid pandemic, but prior to this, was one of Llandrindod’s cherished institutions, repairing items ranging from CD players to woolly jumpers.
Milestones for the service include the thousandth item, which was fixed in February 2019, and the café’s fifth anniversary, which was celebrated in July 2019.
The Repair Café is one of the projects organised by Trawsnewid Llandrindod Transition, which is part of the Transition Network, a worldwide organisation of people who want to do something practical in a local setting to reduce their impact on the environment, in the face of climate change and diminishing resources.
The group focuses on practical local actions which are fun and rewarding to do as well as bringing longer-term benefits, with the aim of helping Llandrindod make the transition to a low-carbon, sustainable and ethical future.
The group runs various local projects, which includes Incredible Edible Llandrindod and the Pomarium.
