Blas Crickhowell, an independent wine, beer and spirits shop with an in-store tasting room, is set to open next week.

Located at 1A Beaufort Street, the 15 sq m space is believed to be Wales’s smallest tasting room.

Despite its size, the shop offers a curated range of around 80 wines, 35 spirits and 30 beers and ciders, with Welsh producers forming a central part of the selection.

Local wines from The Dell vineyard, eight miles away, are stocked alongside bottles from Ancre Hill Estates in Monmouthshire. Welsh spirits include Silver Circle Distillery and Penderyn whisky, while beers feature Antur in Crickhowell and Sobremesa in Abergavenny.

The business has been founded by Peter and Mared Jones. Peter, a former RAF Physical Training Instructor, has spent the past year building the venture from the ground up with his wife, Mared, a translator, who has helped ensure Welsh language is part of the shop’s identity.

"Blas means 'taste' in Welsh," said Peter.

"That's exactly what this is, a place to discover something you wouldn't find in a supermarket, most things in the shop you can try before you buy, so when you leave, it will be with something you’ll genuinely love. We're not experts telling people what to drink. We're enthusiasts who want to share what we love... a great drink"

The tasting room, licensed for up to eight people including the host, offers 75ml wine pours, 25ml spirits and bottled craft beers and ciders. Around 20 wines are available by the glass each day, with prices starting at £3.50 for wine and £4 for spirits.

Blas has also launched “The Fifty”, a limited founding membership of 50 people, offering a lifetime 10 per cent discount, numbered copper membership cards, early access to limited bottles, tasting events and a members’ Signal group for releases.

The shop opens to the public on June 26, coinciding with Crickhowell Food Festival weekend.
