A CEREMONIAL casting off will mark the purchase of fishing rights for a beautiful one mile stretch of the River Wye on Monday, February 9.
The rights have been purchased for the Warren area of Hay-on-Wye by a community group, the Warren Trust, which wants to provide permanent leisure facilities for the people of the town and its visitors.
The trust paid, which paid £50,000 last Friday, January 30 to buy the rights from the estate of late Cardiff solicitor, Brodie Smith, has secured a stretch from Steeple Poole near St Mary's Church in Hay upstream beyond The Warren to The Burlands as well as some woodland and land.
The buying of the fishing rights is the latest in a line of assets secured for the town by the Trust and its forbears.
The trustees continue to maintain the riverside meadow as well as Hay's Butter Market and other sites, including the Login Walk near The Warren and a four-acre woodland at The Warren, for locals and visitors to enjoy. The trustees also want to get full charitable status for the Warren Trust to help protect the town's assets it is caring for.
The celebratory casting off will take place at The Warren on Monday, February 9 at 2pm.
