A town near the Black Mountains came together to enjoy its first-ever Wheelbarrow Rally.

Talgarth was the backdrop to the “green event with a difference” which saw local groups, individuals, sports clubs and other different communities in the town and surrounding area come together with their wheelbarrows last Saturday, June 26.

Organised by Grow for Talgarth and hosted on Griffiths Green, High Street by the kind permission of Pauline Griffiths, there were a total of some 23 wheelbarrows of every vintage and on a wide range of themes.

Refreshments were provided by the Ladies of Talgarth Luncheon Club, and a large crowd of all ages turned up to support the event.

The event comes just days before the judging of the Wales in Bloom competition next Monday, July 4, which has been a key focus of Grow for Talgarth’s efforts in recent months.

Helen Colbert of Grow for Talgarth was delighted with the turnout.

She said: “It was a great community event and very well attended. It was lovely to see so many people coming together to admire the wheelbarrows and have a chat. It is also encouraging, as we all make our final preparations ahead of next week’s visit.”

Commenting on the occasion, Talgarth County Councillor William Powell said: “I was really impressed by the range of entries, drawn from all over town and further afield. In several cases, neighbours teamed up and made a joint effort.

“In the hour or so before the event opened, wheelbarrows were converging on the town centre from all directions and it was a really nice occasion for friends, old and new, to catch up.

“Whilst we await the judging of this year’s Wales in Bloom competition, in the Wheelbarrow Rally everyone was a winner – and I congratulate the organisers and everyone who took part, on making it such a success.”
