Pupils and staff at Ysgol Pontsenni are celebrating after the school was awarded its second Green Flag – an accolade recognising outstanding commitment to sustainability and environmental action.

The Eco-Schools Green Flag, run by Keep Wales Tidy, is an internationally recognised symbol of excellence in environmental education and eco-friendly practices.

Securing the award for a second time marks a major milestone for the school, and reflects the hard work and dedication of both pupils and staff in making their school a greener, more sustainable place to learn.

Over the past year, children have taken part in a wide range of activities focused on raising environmental awareness and promoting practical action. Pupils have explored global issues such as deforestation, water conservation, climate change and cultural diversity, while also taking real-world steps to support local wildlife.

From planting pollinator-friendly flowers to building bug hotels and installing bird boxes, Ysgol Pontsenni’s gardening club and wider school community have worked to nurture natural habitats around the grounds.

A key part of the school’s success has been the efforts of the Eco Council Committee – a group of pupils from across the year groups who led projects, raised awareness, and championed the school’s Eco Code.

Headteacher Mrs K Harry said: “We are incredibly proud of our pupils and staff for this achievement. The Green Flag is a testament to the hard work, creativity, and environmental commitment of everyone at Ysgol Pontsenni. Our pupils are learning not only about the world around them but also how to care for it responsibly and sustainably. Diolch yn fawr i bawb am eich cymorth.”

The Green Flag is a reflection of the school’s wider ethos – to help develop well-rounded, informed citizens who care deeply about the world they live in.

As the pupils say: “small changes can make a big difference.”
