Eisteddfod Ysgol y Gelli Gandryll has taken place, with pupils celebrating Welsh culture and heritage in a lively, day-long event.
The festivities at Hay-on-Wye Primary School opened with Little Stars pre-school performing the Welsh song Dyma Fi. Throughout the day, pupils from all years took part with enthusiasm, performing songs, reciting poems, and entering craft and Welsh cake competitions. The cake competition alone attracted more than 40 entries, with proud parents supporting at home and on the day.
Staff prepared the hall and stage, which were both decorated with Welsh bunting.
The highlight of the Eisteddfod was the Chairing Ceremony. Years 3, 4, and 5 winners – Isabelle, Carly, and Spiro – joined Year 6 bard Darcey on stage. Darcey was chaired to cheers of “Heddwch,” while Mr Wayne Maddy presented a bespoke wooden sword for the occasion. Guest adjudicator Mrs Erilys Non Jones praised the performances, particularly the choir’s rendition of Calon Lân, saying she hadn’t heard it sung with such gusto since a match at the Principality Stadium. The celebrations concluded with the school singing the Welsh national anthem together.
The winning house was Llynfi, followed by Dulais and Wye.
A spoksperson for the school said: “Congratulations to all pupils for competing so well and for listening to each other perform.”
