The amount of litter accumulating on our roadside verges is increasing which is a reflection of the disrespectful attitude of a section of our society towards the environment.
Many communities now have litter picking groups and my wife and I belong to such a group which for many years has been operating on a regular basis in and around our village of Talybont-on-Usk. These groups play a vital role in maintaining a clean and attractive environment for both residents and visitors.
Historically, Powys County Council was well known for its efficient removal of litter from the verges of its trunk roads but this practice has sadly been neglected in recent years. It is my hope that the practice of litter picking by the Authority will be renewed this year particularly before the grass cutting season begins in the Spring otherwise we will once again witness the litter shredded by the machinery over a much wider area.
