THE Radnorshire Indoor Bowling Association winter season’s Thursday afternoon league was again a very close and competitive contest, writes Clive Barrett.

The Meerkats had been crowned champions, with a winning total of 28 points.

However on the final Thursday, March 7 the runners-up were decided when the Newbridge team won, finishing with 26 points, following an excellent second half to the season when they won seven out of nine games.

Further there was a tie for third place with both the Nomads and Penybont finishing on 24 points. At the end of the afternoon, and before the presentations the organiser of the Thursday league Dai James thanked everyone who had helped him make the league such a success.

He especially thanked the bowlers who had turned up to play every week during the winter months.

He then introduced Annette Barrett who presented the trophy which she and her sister Dorothy Moseley (nee Rogers) donated nine years ago in memory of their father the late Councillor Walter Rogers.

The runners-up, Newbridge, who were also runners up two years ago were presented with their prize money, team members were Clive Barrett (captain), Annette Barrett, John Lloyd, John Rees, Colin Pugsley, Ann Edwards and Shirley King.

The trophy and prize money were presented to the winners and holders the Meerkats, captain Dai Stephens, the other team members were Jenny Davies, Rob Williams, Ken Bound, Haydn Morgans, Bryan Price, Geoff Lloyd, and Betty Morgan MBE.

The Tuesday afternoon triples league wasn’t quite as tight as the Thursday league but was nevertheless very competitive.

The Wickers ran out as champions with 30 points, and the runners up the James Gang, four points behind with 26 points.

There was also a tie for third position between the Llani Boys and the Has Beens.

The members of the winning Wickers team were Maureen Beckinsale M (captain), Mary Bufton, Bob McCann, Mike Evans, Derek Boorman, Kay Coulson and Don Davies.

The runners-up the James Gang consisted of Dai James, Gill James, Ray Price, Brian Torode and David Michael.
