A BRECON basketball player has won a bronze medal representing the Great Britain women’s team at the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi.
Hannah Charnley, who plays the sport with the Brecon Integrated Sports Association, was part of the team that lost to Serbia and USA but won a key match against India to claim third spot in the competition.
Hannah is out there alongside fellow BISA basketball player Tommy Davies, who is playing for the Great Britain men/mixed team which was due to play in the final of their competition against Canada this morning.
The closing ceremony will take place tomorrow with the Great Britain teams returning to the UK on Friday.
The Special Olympics World Games is the world’s largest humanitarian and sporting event of 2019 featuring seven days of competition, involving 7,000 athletes, across 24 sports.
Great Britain is being represented by 129 athletes.
Tommy, 19, captained the silver-winning Wales basketball team in the Special Olympics National Summer Games in 2018. He is a sports centre assistant and basketball and fitness training are his passion.
Artist Hannah, who wears the No.14 shirt is an international Special Olympian in athletics and has trained hard for the last couple of years with her clubs and Special Olympics GB basketball coaches.
During their visit to Abu Dhabi, Hannah and Tommy and their families have visited Sheikh Zayed Mosque and enjoyed watching camel racing on the telly.
Hannah and Tommy were able to attend the Games thanks to fundraising by their fellow Brecon Integrated Sports Association members and many local organisations, including The Keith Morris Appeal, South Powys Disability Network Forum, Tim Belcher’s Colour Run, Brecon Jazz Festival, Talybont Bikefest and Ysgol Penmaes.
