A new project aimed at helping teenage girls build confidence through cycling is set to launch in Wales, thanks to funding awarded to the Beicio Cymru Foundation from the National Lottery Awards for All Fund.
The project, called Pedal and Picnic, will support girls aged 11–17 living in areas of high deprivation to enjoy cycling in a fun, social and welcoming environment. The initiative focuses on building confidence, encouraging outdoor activity and helping girls feel more comfortable cycling in their local communities.
Pedal and Picnic has been informed by research carried out in partnership with Cardiff Metropolitan University, which explored the barriers and motivations for girls cycling in their local areas. The findings helped shape a programme that prioritises confidence, connection and enjoyment rather than competition.
The project will bring girls together through a series of social, led bike rides, each paired with a picnic or another relaxed activity. Sessions are designed to support skill development while encouraging participants to explore local green spaces and spend time outdoors with others their age.
Pedal and Picnic will be delivered in four locations across Wales: Llanrumney, Cardiff; Riverside, Cardiff; Ystradgynlais and in Bangor.
The project is aimed at girls who can already ride a bike but would like to improve their skills, grow their confidence and ride socially with others in their area.
Beicio Cymru Foundation is also encouraging local organisations, volunteers and community partners to get involved. Support could include helping to deliver sessions, becoming a ride leader, offering local knowledge, or supporting the project with bikes, routes or facilities.
Anyone interested in getting involved or finding out more about the project is encouraged to contact Anna Buckland, Pedal and Picnic Project Coordinator, via email at [email protected].
