ARDAL LEAGUES

Brecon Corries, who ended 2025 with a seven-match unbeaten run in the Ardal League South East, saw Saturday’s home match against Cwmbran Town postponed following a morning pitch inspection.

Our four local teams in the Ardal League North East were also frustrated by the weather at the weekend. Builth Wells, looking to build on their 5-1 Boxing Day win at Llandrindod Wells, saw their home clash with Llanfair United postponed. The Bulls have announced the signing of midfielder Cameron Godsall from Westfields. Llandrindod themselves saw their trip to Cefn Albion postponed while the big East Radnor derby between Knighton Town and Radnor Valley will also now have to be rearranged.

With Knighton out of action, Bow Street took the opportunity to move second above the Radnor Robins on goal difference following a 7-0 home win over bottom-of-the-table Lex X1. There were two goals each for Taylor Watts, Rhys Hughes and Steff Davies, with Josh Taylor completing the tally.

In the only other game played, Dolgellau ran out 4-0 winners over Kerry with Guto Pugh heading them in front before Gerwyn Williams weighed in with a hat-trick.

Dolgellau will be delighted with their win having seen Osian Morris and Dennis Bates depart for Tier Two side Brickfield Rangers in the week. Another significant signing in the transfer window saw Rhos Aelwyd topscorer Aled Parry join league leaders Llanuwchllyn, who themselves have lost Tom Roberts and Tom Dyer to Ruthin Town.

WATSON FINANCIAL MID WALES LEAGUE (SOUTH)

Harry Sharman started the New Year with a bang firing a four-goal salvo as Talgarth Town won 5-0 at Hay Development to move into second spot. Talgarth had too much experience for the young Development side and forged a two-goal interval lead through Tom Sharman-Jones and Sharman, who then grabbed a second half hat-trick in just eight minutes.

Talgarth, who are unbeaten in the league this season, are a point behind leaders Hay St Marys whose scheduled fixture at St Harmon was called off late in the day after the Saints had travelled.

Hay have strengthened over the Christmas break announcing that both Matty Tong and Gabriel Moore are back with the cub and would have started at St Harmon if the game had gone ahead.

MMP CENTRAL WALES LEAGUES

Rhayader Town are bidding for a place in the quarter finals of the prestigious Emrys Morgan Cup when they host Caersws Development on Wednesday, weather permitting. The game has twice been postponed at Caersws and the Red Kites now have home advantage and go into the tie on the back of three straight league wins. Rhayader had hoped to make it four on Saturday but their match at Bont fell to the weather.

Two games did go ahead and produced wins for Lampeter Town and Machynlleth. Lampeter have opened up a seven-point lead at the top after a 3-0 win at Penrhyncoch Reserves where Rhodri Morgan (2) and Hari Jones got the goals in a seven-minute spell just before half-time.

Machynlleth beat Caersws Development 2-0 with second half goals from Dion Kohler and Louis Roberts securing them a fourth straight win.

In the one game to survive in the MMP Central Wales League (North), Tywyn Bryncrug took the opportunity to go top after beating Berriew 2-1 at home. Aston Heath and Aled Jones struck either side of half-time before Tom Davies reduced the deficit for Berriew.

JD CYMRU (NORTH)

Caersws came out on top in the big Mid Wales derby in the JD Cymru North on New Year’s Day with a 1-0 win against arch rivals, Newtown. Former Rhayader Town and Builth Wells striker Tommy Rowlands proved to be the match winner capping a man of the match performance with the all-important goal in the second half in front of a bumper crowd of 1,304 at The Recreation Ground.

Penrhyncoch gained a further point in their relegation battle with the in-form Daniel Owen snatching a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at home against fellow strugglers Ruthin Town. Owen netted his fifth goal in the last four games two minutes from time after Daniel Holland had given Ruthin an interval lead. Penrhyn have now taken eight points from the last 12 on offer but are still two points adrift at the foot of the table after Gresford Athletic netted in stoppage time to snatch a 3-2 victory at Denbigh Town.

In the JD Cymru South, Aberystwyth Town drew 1-1 with Carmarthen Town and lie fifth in the league table, seven points off the promotion places.

TNS saw their lead at the top of the JD Cymru Premier trimmed following a 3-1 defeat at second placed Connahs Quay Nomads who scored through Rhys Hughes (pen), Max Woodcock and Callum West. And Nomads are just a point behind the leaders after coming from behind to defeat Barry Town 3-1 on Saturday to make it eight wins in a row. TNS, who were frozen out, do have a game in hand.

CUP DRAWS

Knighton Town, whose form in the Ardal League North East probably makes them favourites for this season’s Aspidistra Radnorshire Cup, have been drawn away at Builth Wells in the semi-finals. Knighton last won the County Cup way back in the 2007-2008 season while Builth, runners-up last season, lifted the trophy in 2023-2024. Rhayader Town host local rivals Llandrindod Wells in the other semi-final.

The draw for the quarter finals of the Pip Samuel (Electrical) Mid Wales (South) League Cup was also made recently as follows: Brecon FC v Llandrindod Wells Res, Builth Wells Res v Hay St Marys, Hay Development v Llanidloes Town Res or Rhayader Development, Talgarth Town v Knighton Town Res

Elsewhere, Llandrindod Wells have drawn either Guilsfield or Caersws in the Central Wales Cup semi-finals while in the Emrys Morgan Cup, Rhayader are away at Carno in the quarter-finals if they can overcome Caersws Development in the one delayed fourth round tie.
