Builth Wells opened their Ardal League North East campaign with a well deserved 1-1 draw against a much-fancied Knighton Town on Tuesday night. Builth supporters will have been encouraged with wha they had seen following a fine all-round team display with stand out performances all over the pitch.

Knighton, who were runners-up last season, took an early lead when Luke Boundford headed a free-kick into the path of Harley Morris who finished well for a debut goal. Builth lost Jamie Evans to an ankle injury midway through the first half but his replacement, Ruben Edwards made an immediate impact. Edwards, who will prove a huge signing for the Bulls, turned in an inviting cross from Ryan Powell at the near post following a marauding run from the Builth captain.

With Luke Boundford and Shane Sutton in their ranks, Knighton are always going to cause problems from set pieces and Boundford headed over from Kieran Dovey’s corner in the second half but a youthful Builth gave as good as they got. Builth definitely ended the game the stronger and Ryan Powell almost grabbed a late winner when his header came back off the inside of the post from an Ollie Woods corner.

Pleasing for both sides was the form of the youngsters in the line-ups. For Knighton, Flynn Morris, Harley Morris and Finley Williams showed great potential while for Builth, Rhys Pugh, James Cadmore, Harry Edwards, Seth Bridgeman and Ruben Edwards suggest the future is bright on The Last Field.

Kerry were handed a Tier Three reprieve at the end of last season and are out to make the most of that as they kicked off with a 6-1 victory over Llanrhaedr. Jamie Breeze grabbed his second hat-trick in four days and Dteffan Rogers (2) and Fin Bellamore got the other goals with the returning Iwan Matthews scoring for Llanrhaedr.

Newcomers, Carno were beaten 2-0 at Dolgellau where Gerwyn Williams netted twice while the division’s other new side, FC Queens Park hit the ground running with a 6-2 verdict over Corwen which included a hat-trick for Michael Pritchard.

Cefn Albion beat Rhos Aelwyd 2-0 with goals from Dion Gibbins and Thomas Broadhurst while former Albion striker, Alex Williams proved the difference as Pence triumphed 1-0 at Llangollen Town.

There were two games in the MMP Central Wales League (North) in midweek resulting in wins for Forden United and Machynlleth. Jake O’Donnell, Ryan Jenkins and an own goal guided Forden to a 3-1 success over Bishops Castle who had led through Thomas Edwards while captain, Alfie Westwood scored in the last minute as Mach snatched a 1-0 victory at Abermule.
