Brecon Boxer Dan Pitt will be competing in the Commonwealth Games quarterfinals tonight (29 July) after winning his first two matches in Scotland.

The match will be available to watch on TNT Sports and HBO MAX and is expected to begin at 8.45pm.

The story so far

Pitt, 20, from Brecon won his first two matches of the games, beating Samoa’s Dee Ioapo in the Round of 32, and Papa New Guinea’s Kua Gunua Mua.

Dan has won both matches by unanimous decision and will be looking for a similar result this evening as he looks to make it through to the semi finals in his hunt for a medal.

He dominated in his first match up seeing off Dee Ioapo with ease, but had to come from behind in his second bout after being down on the scorecards after round one.

“He came out strong in the first (round),” said Dan when talking to Welsh Boxing. “He showed his power and caught me with a few shots. I knew straight away and I knew going into it, seeing some footage from him before, all the footage we could find he was stopping his opponent, so I knew he was going to come out strong.

“I boxed on the back foot, went down in the first on points but stuck to the game plan and I managed to bring it back.

“I’m feeling great. It’s obviously the quarterfinals, so if I win the next one then I'm guaranteed a bronze medal. It would be a dream to medal at these games.

“My face might look a bit bruised but I’m feeling fresh. I’ve got a couple days of rest and I can’t wait to go into the quarterfinals.

“We (Team Wales) have got all seven of our boxers into the quarters, all going for medals. I just can’t wait. I think we’ve got some great experience, a few great boxers who have been in the games before with Helen Jones, Rosie Eccles and Owain Harris-Allan. They’ve got experience with them, they can sort of guide us in the right direction when we have questions.

“Everyone’s worked so hard leading up to this. We’ve all suffered together for months and months and months now. So we’re going to enjoy the experience,” said Dan.

Tonight’s opponent

Dan’s opponent tonight is Australia’s Paul Trainor. Fighting out of Sydney, the 24-year-old won his first two preliminary rounds beating Scotland’s Alan Perrie, and Namibia’s Gebhard Ipinge.

Trainor has a record of 57 wins and 17 losses in his 74 bouts.

The southpaw made his debut in 2021, and will have some Northern Irish fans in his corner with his mother and father being from Draperstown in Northern Ireland.

Paul was booed from the home Scottish fans after his fight with Alan Perrie which saw the referee make an early stoppage in the fight. The Scottish boxer refused to shake the Aussie’s hand after the stoppage.

Brecon’s Pitt will be hoping a cut under his eye has heeled after a clash of heads in his last bout.
