ANOTHER successful weekend for Brecon Cricket Club with both 1st and 2nd teams recording convincing victories which keeps up their respective promotion challenges with the season now starting to run down.
At home, the 1st team batting first never really looked like doing anything other than winning and posted 248 for 3 with a very capable batting performance.
The star of the innings was Greg Webber with exactly 100no to continue his memorable season. He was able to build on an excellent opener’s innings from Matt Williams of 74, himself enjoying a productive season at the top of the order, and the pair put together a partnership of 72 before Williams was dismissed.
Gethin Phillips then contributed a fluent 34 before a fourth wicket partnership was forged between Webber and Will Thumper, who struck an aggressive 57no, as they put the final touches to the innings with an unbeaten stand of 122.
A total of 248 is always a challenge for any chasing side and against the Brecon bowling attack something of a daunting proposition and this proved the case as Sully slumped to 56 for 6. However a recovery saw Sully eventfully total 171 all out but without ever mounting a challenge.
Once again Brecon’s bowling was in top form with Sam Williams (2 for 30) and Tom Jones (1 for 25) doing the initial damage but it was James Mitchell with the superb figures of 6 for 18 that ensured another victory. John Kenchington (1 for 17) was the other wicket taker in a fine team performance which took their winning streak to 8 from 8.
Away at the picturesque Vale ground the 2nd team also ran out comfortable winners by 7 wickets. The Vale electing to bat first on winning the toss made a positive start but then fell away rapidly to only post 116 all out.
Doing the main damage for Brecon with the ball were Ben Kenchington (3 for 19) and Derek Osborne (3 for 28). Finn Starkey bowled an excellent opening spell with 1 for 14 and in the final overs Steve Kenchington (2 for 3) put in a skilful spin bowling performance as the innings collapsed.
Brecon’s reply was once again dominated by Rhys Pritchard with a powerfully struck 56no. He received excellent support from Rowan Starkey (30) in a partnership of 89 which saw the Vale total chased down in 19 overs for the loss of 3 wickets.
