A BRILLIANT weekend for Brecon Cricket Club saw both teams’ record impressive victories.
The wins really enhance their respective promotion challenges with convincing victories overcoming both the opposition and the adverse ground conditions following the week’s heavy rain.
Away at Lisvane the 1st team recorded a convincing eight wicket victory with the home team’s innings never taking off on a slow green wicket. In such conditions there are not many better bowlers in the league than John Kenchington and he really cashed in with four for 23.
Captain Sam Williams also put in a killer spell with 2 for 13 from 10 over’s, Harry Jones 3 for 38 and Tom Jones 1 for 23 also kept the pressure up as they ran through the Lisvane batting to bowl them out for 114.
When Brecon batted they coasted to victory led yet again by Greg Webber (67no) who received solid support from Andy McDonald (27no) to ensure a victory which moves Brecon to within a shout of the promotion places.
The 2nd team at home put up a strong performance, in a game sponsored by Charles Crookes of George Tudor De Winton, Brecon, to defeat Barry Wanderers by 173 runs set up by an elegant century from James Davenport (104) in a total of 240 for 3.
Also making good contributions were Gwyn Price (33) and Mark Waldeck (31) with an opening stand of 51; Rod Thomas (23) and Ioan Edwards (12) ensured the scoreboard kept moving on Davenport’s dismissal as the overs ran down.
The Barry innings was virtually destroyed by the opening pace bowling from Brecon of Ryan Morgan (4 for 22) and Ben Kenchington ( 3 for 30) and concluded on 67 all out after 18 over’s.
The other wicket takers were Daffydd Edwards (2 for 2) and Finn Starkey (1 for 8). Much credit must go to the home team’s hard working grounds men for getting the game on.
