BRECON High School hosted an exciting inaugural senior boys’ basketball tournament involving five teams who battled it out in a round robin tournament format of games lasting 12 minutes.

Four of the 10 games played involving Brecon B, Gwernyfed and Builth came down to a single point deciding a win or loss which had players and spectators from all teams on their feet cheering every break, rebound and score; It was breathless end to end stuff.

The matches of the day by far were the last two which saw Gwernyfeds young team led by Jack Whitelaw come back from a one-point deficit against Builth high schools sixth formers to score in the last 20 seconds to take the match 8-7; the other nail biter was the play off final between Crickhowell and Brecon A both of whom had won all their games and had also secured maximum bonus points by scoring 12 or more points in each.

These two teams’ athletes know each other well and have played each other on numerous occasions over the last two years, so respective captains took their players aside before this crucial final for a team talk and formulate a game plan to break down one another’s strong defences.

Crickhowell got ahead 8-2 early on only for Brecon to respond by effective use of the fast break to close back to 8-7.

Captain Makenzie Turner turned on the heat to take his Crickhowell team clear 14-11 with two minutes to go; this left enough time for Brecon’s captain Asim Mugar to break down the right twice in succession leaving players trailing behind him to bring it back to 14-13, the game now became a battle of wills.

With time running out and some good ball retention Crickhowell held on to secure the win and the tournament (great match winning celebration dance / roll!) with Brecon A runners up.

Brecon’s Platinum sports ambassador Sarah Miles and 5x 60 sports officers Nicola Jones and Jemma Alderson were on hand to present the well-earned, certificates medals and trophies.

PE teacher at Brecon High School Charlie Northey said:"I would like to thank all the players who attended and applaud you all for your exceptional spirt of fair play throughout the tournament and dazzling displays of team work and skill; thanks must also go to all the volunteer pupil timekeepers, chief scorer Soobey Wu and Mr Miller who assisted me with the umpiring."

Final Placings: First: Crickhowell; Second: Brecon A; Third: Gwernyfed; Fourth: Brecon B; Fifth: Builth.
