This year’s Builth Bike Bash celebrated the career of Welsh cycling legend Geraint Thomas, who recently retired after a remarkable 19-year career.Riders gear up at the Builth Bike Bash.
On Sunday, September 7, 109 riders took to The Groe in Builth Wells for the ‘#RidewithG-themed Bike Bash’, and rode a total amount of 1373 miles, which is more than twice the distance of this year’s Tour of Britain that finished in Cardiff earlier this month.
Beicio Cymru treated participants at the event with Geraint Thomas masks and other goodies. Thomas, Wales’ most successful cyclist, boasts an illustrious career including three world championship titles, the 2018 Tour de France, and two Olympic gold medals from 2008 and 2012.
Participants at the event were treated to cookies and apples generously donated by Asda Express, and each rider received a water bottle as a sign-on gift.
Many cyclists were in action all day, completing more than 50 laps each - covering over 40 miles in total. Early in the event, some laps were just half a mile, adding to the challenge and excitement for the riders.
An outstanding achievement was recorded by four-year-old Dyfan, who impressively rode 26 miles during the event.
A spokesperson for the Bike Bash said: “This year’s turnout was fantastic, especially as the weather forecast was poor. The few showers definitely didn’t dampen spirits with 109 riders managing to complete 1373 miles, which is more than twice the distance that Geraint Thomas rode at this year’s Tour of Britian. An amazing effort by everyone involved.
“The committee would like to thank the volunteers who came along to help out and the parents for supporting the event and bringing their kids along.”
Chris Probert said: “We wouldn’t be able to hold the event without the help and support of the community of Builth.”
