A BRACE from Jack Bain secured the Brecon Corries all three points when they hosted their namesakes from Cardiff. Bain scored both his goals before halftime and in the second half Cardiff Corries pulled one back. The Rich Field side are now in fourth place in the Highadmit Projects South Wales Alliance League, eight behind leaders Cardiff Draconians.
From the off it was the Corries of Brecon that took hold of the game and dominated proceedings, the return of Bain upfront alongside Paul Keddle adding a cutting edge in attack. Very quickly Brecon were enjoying success down each flank with wingers Gareth Aplin (pictured below) and Rhys Thomas impressing with their directness and providing chances to their forwards.
On 20 minutes Brecon scored one of the best goals witnessed at the Rich Field for many a year. Starting at the goalkeeper’s feet the ball was played confidently across the back four then into midfield, a 40-yard diagonal ball accurately picking out the advancing fullback who played a neat pass to set up the cross that was headed by Jack Bain back across the Cardiff keeper into the back of the net. 1-0 to the home team and they were cruising, the second goal coming soon after with another headed goal from Bain after good work down the left from Gareth Aplin and Paul Keddle. It was only some outstanding goalkeeping from the Cardiff keeper that prevented the Corries going into the halftime break 4-0 ahead.
The second half saw Cardiff Corries chasing the game. They pushed forward at every opportunity, putting the home defence on the back foot. Even so, Brecon keeper Stephen Price was rarely tested as Cardiff lacked killer instinct in front of goal, spurning a couple of glorious chances. Things heated up midway through the second half as the intensity increased but to their credit Brecon kept their heads, even after Cardiff pulled a goal back when a through ball was neatly finished off. With Cardiff throwing everyone forward gaps in their defence opened up allowing Brecon the chance to extend their lead and finish off the game. However, it was the Cardiff keeper yet again who frustrated Brecon, preventing a Bain hat-trick, and keeping things tense till the very end.
The 2-1 win was a deserved result for Brecon Corries who were the better team on the day and they now go into Saturday’s game against 11th-placed Pencoed Athletic full of confidence (kick-off 2pm). The Corries will then be away to Ynyshir Albion on Saturday, December 2 and Caerphilly Athletic on Saturday, December 9 and finish 2017 at home to Merthyr Saints on Saturday, December 16. There will then be a break of fixtures over the festive period until January 6 2018.
