BUILTH Wells Reserves made the best possible start to their Watson Financial Mid Wales League (South) campaign with a 2-1 victory at Talgarth Town.

Kyle O’Shea, last season’s leading goalscorer with Brecon FC, put his new side, Talgarth ahead in the first half but a youthful Builth hit back. Aled Powell equalised when he headed in from a George Woods corner and Rudi Griffiths got the winner having been set up by Luke Evans.

Builth manager, Kevin Claridge said: "We were hanging on a bit at the end but battled hard for the result and are really pleased with such a young side."

Llandrindod Wells kicked off their season in style with a 4-0 verdict at Llanidloes Town Reserves where Scott Davies opened the scoring after good work from Jeff Jones.

Ashley Thomas added a second direct from a free-kick and Stuart Williams ended a solo run to fire a third before Jason Coles ran from halfway to complete the tally.

Rhayader Town Reserves began their defence of the title with a 3-0 win at local rivals, St Harmon. In front of the show-night crowd, it was Rhayader who took an interval lead through 16-year-old debutant, Richard Davies who scored with a strike from the edge of the box.

Alan Samuel added a second after the break before a third goal from Johnny Jones sealed the points.

Knighton Town Reserves, runners-uop for the past two seasons, kicked off with a 1-0 success at Brecon Northcote. Ieuan Webb grabbed the all important goal in the second half to settle a match which was close to call.

Penybont United Reserves marked their league debut with a goalless draw at Presteigne Reserves. Last season’s South Powys Under 16 League and Cup double winners were however indebted to ‘keeper, Jack Smillie who made a string of fine saves to keep Presteigne at bay.
