Caerau Ely 4 Brecon Corries 0
THE Corries’ giant killing run in the FAW Welsh Cup came to a crushing end on Saturday as they lost 4-0 away to Welsh League Division 1 side Caerau Ely.
On a heavy pitch and with a very strong wind the game was never going to be a classic but the travelling Corries fans were expectant of a famous upset and a place in the last 16 of the Welsh Cup.
But, alas, it wasn’t to be. The advantage of playing at home was telling as Caerau dominated the first quarter of the match, continually camped in the Corries half, and forcing some early saves from Corries keeper and Captain, Stephen Price.
The strong wind was making it increasingly difficult for the Corries to get out of their own half and the pressure soon told as Caerau opened the scoring after 30 mins. The scoring chances were few and far between for the Corries and they battled well to keep the score at 1-0 going into halftime.
With the wind at their backs there was hope amongst the Corries supporters that this game could be turned around. But heartbreak soon followed as two quick goals put Caerau 3-0 up, effectively ending the Corries’ cup dreams. To their credit the Corries kept pressing in search for some consolation and came very close with efforts from Damien Daniels and Rob Chesters but the fourth goal late on was the nail in the coffin for the Corries.
Corries Player/Manager Damien Daniels: "Today was a disappointing end to what has been a fabulous cup run for us as a team. Every single member of the squad can take great pride in what they’ve achieved over the past few months. I’m proud of every single one of them."
Corries Vice-Chairman Adam Jones added: "Yes, we’re bitterly disappointed about today’s result but this year’s Welsh Cup has been a great success story. The way we beat higher League opposition on three occasions, and being featured on FAW TV and radio podcasts boosted the profile of, not only Brecon Corries, but the town of Brecon also."
The Corries are back in league action this Saturday as they welcome league leaders, Cornelly Utd, to the Rich Field. Kick off is 2pm.
