A superb comeback from Brecon Corries, as well as big wins for Builth Wells, Radnor Valley and Hay St Marys were among some of the highlights of the football action over the bank holiday weekend.
Corries again left it late to stage a superb comeback before notching their second win of the season in the Ardal League South East.
Damien Daniels’ side came away from fellow Ardal newcomers, Lliswerry with a 3-2 victory with Craig Evans snatching the winner six minutes into stoppage time. It capped another incredible fightback from Corries who had earlier trailed 2-0 with Dale Cooke, in the first half, and Lewis Grant, on the hour mark, having put Lliswerry in what looked a winning position.
James Jeffreys sparked Corries comeback reducing the deficit on 76 minutes and Jack Bain tied the scores just a minute after coming off the bench. And despite seeing summer signing, Tomos Ralph sent off, it was ten man Corries who snatched victory with Evans popping up with his dramatic late winner.
Corries sit ninth in the table with a record of two wins and two losses, although have a game in hand on teams above them.
In the Ardal League North East, Builth Wells are up to fifth after celebrating a 4-1 victory at Llanrhaeadr.
After a goalless first half, Ollie Woods (2), Lyndon Jones and Will Cleaton struck for The Bulls who can be pleased with their start to life in Tier Three.
It was tight first half at Llanrhaeadr where both sides had chances but Builth took control after an early second half goal from Ollie Woods who finished well from a tight angle. The impressive Woods added his and Builth’s second after Lyndon Jones and Aeron Powell combined and Jones made it three after cutting in from the left. The Bulls saw Ryan Powell sent off after picking up a second yellow card five minutes from time and Joe Evans pulled one back for Llanrhaeadr from the penalty spot when Danny Ives handled. But Builth fittingly had the last word with substitute, Will Cleaton completing their third league win of the term in stoppage time.
Rhayader Town picked up their first point of the campaign in a 2-2 draw at home against Dolgellau but The Red Kites were so close to claiming all three. Dolgellau netted their equaliser two minutes from time and Rhayader then saw new signing, Grant Stamp have a twice taken penalty saved in stoppage time.
Rhayader did well to overcome the loss of key defenders, Joe Wozencraft and James Thompson to injury in the first half and took the lead three minutes before half-time through Sion Herman. The Radnorshire side, who handed debuts to Stamp (ex-Ammanford) and Tai Jones, who has joined from Montgomery Town, doubled their lead on 56 minutes with Herman again the man on target with a screamer from outside the box. Cai Johnson reduced the deficit for Dolgellau soon after but just as it looked as if Rhayader could hold out, David Edwards popped up with a late goal for the visitors. And there was late drama on The Weirglodd with Rhayader awarded a penalty which Stamp converted first time but saw his second effort saved by ‘keeper, Darren Andrews after the referee ruled it had to be retaken.
Llandrindod Wells slipped to a 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Llanfair United who maintained their one hundred per cent record but Llandrindod pushed them all the way. Stuart Williams gave Llandrindod the lead but the visitors hit back through ex-Berriew defender, Jack Jones and Ben Jones. Robbie Nicholls had the Spa side back on terms by half-time but a 48th minute penalty scored by another former Berriew man, George Mitten was to condemn them to defeat although Llanfair ‘keeper, Lee Andrew produced a number of fine saves to dent Llandrindod an equaliser.
Joey Price scored four times in the first half as Radnor Valley made a belated start to their MMP Central Wales League South campaign with a big 8-0 victory over local rivals, Presteigne St Andrews on Friday night.
Price took just four minutes to open his account with a free-kick and grabbed a second from Callum Matthews’ through ball. Price completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after being bundled over and scored again before half-time to put Radnor out of sight.
Charlie Beaumont netted early in the second half with a deflected strike before Radnor, who look to have more strength in depth than in recent seasons, rang the changes bringing on all five substitutes. Two of these, Geraint Lloyd and Jake Bufton increased the lead before Ieuan Price complete a good night’s work for The Goats by heading home a Tom Lewis free-kick at the far post.
Hay St Marys were also among the goals with Matty Tong bagging four for the second week in a row in an 8-1 drubbing of Aberaeron. Ricky Lynes (2), Jack Biggs and Matt Meredith were The Saints’ other goalscorers all after Ianto Evans had given the visitors the lead.
Llanilar and Tregaron shared the spoils in a 3-3 draw with Jamie Stuart (2) and Osian Simpson-Jones netting for Llanilar and Dylan Davies, Ryan Davies (pen) and Liam Jones for Tegaron.
Elsewhere Penybont United were given permission to call off their game at Penparcau due to a player shortage while in the Central Wales League North, Carno and Trewern United also failed to fulfil fixtures.
Hay St Marys and Radnor Valley then both completed successful bank holiday weekends with wins on Monday.
Hay moved three points clear at the top of the table with a 6-0 victory at Presteigne St Andrews where the in-form Matty Tong bagged yet another hat-trick. Curtis Williams gave The Saints the lead, Tong added a second and the striker then netted either side of half-time to make it eleven goals in three games. Inspirational captain, Liam McAnally extended the lead before Ricky Lynes completed Hay’s tally.
Radnor followed up their 8-0 success over Presteigne last Friday night by triumphing 4-1 at Talgarth Town. Joey Price struck twice in the opening eleven minutes, first from a free-kick and then when put through by Charlie Beaumont. Jordan Harvey pulled one back for The Royals when ‘keeper, Will Fowden failed to deal with Gavin Perry’s long range free-kick. But former Knighton Town striker, Taylor Wozencraft then opened his Radnor account scoring twice before half-time and there was no way back for Talgarth despite a spirited second half showing.
Llandrindod Wells achieved lift off in the FAW National Reserve League Central in midweek with their first points and first goals of the season as they defeated Penrhyncoch 2-1 on The Broadway. Danny Hall gave the Spa men a second half lead and Scott Parry added a second within two minutes of coming on as a substitute before Noah Rowlands reduced the arrears.
Rhayader Town slipped to a 3-2 defeat at home against defending champions, Llanidloes Town and will be disappointed having led 2-0 at half-time through Aaron Bates and Fletcher Chandler (pen). Mason Jones grabbed a crucial score for The Daffs early in the second half and Harri Clarke equalised before last season’s topscorer, Jones nicked the winner with his second of the night. Both sides ended the evening with ten men with Rhayader’s Michael Fowlie and Llanidloes’ Gregg Brown sent off by referee Nigel Mathias.
