RHAYADER Town moved a point clear at the top of the Spar Mid Wales League first division last midweek, with a game in hand, following a 4-0 win at Radnor Valley.

Town took an early lead when Christian Jones smashed the ball home following a poor Radnor clearance and Mattie Lewis added a second before half-time, picking himself up to score from the penalty spot after being brought down.

Rhayader were slow starters in the second half but Mark Davies sealed the win with a bicycle kick before Dane Griffiths grabbed his third goal in as many games when Johnny Jones nicked the ball off a defender and coolly played the striker in on goal.

An outstanding first half performance set Hay St Marys up for a 3-0 home success over Llandrindod Wells.

Stuart Davies opened the scoring from a Brendan Hackett corner and Ryan Davies, who completed a transfer from Monmouth Town earlier in the week, increased the lead beating the off-side trap to round the ‘keeper.

Chris Preece made it three by the break when he was first to react when Rob Sneddon’s cross bounced around in the area. The second half was more even with Llandrindod having their share of chances and possession although Davies had another effort ruled out for off-side for The Saints.

Knighton Town were again without a host of regulars as they took on Berriew for the second time this season. The Robins had to settle for a 1-1 draw away from home with Berriew’s Richard Davies snatching a 90th minute equaliser.

Mark Jones had given Knighton the lead with a great finish following good work from Joel Layton and they missed further chances which was to prove costly. But The Robins could have won it with Dewi Allen heading against the bar from Adam Worton’s stoppage time free-kick
