HAY St Marys are through to the Spar Mid Wales League Cup following Friday night’s semi-final victory over Knighton Town.

The Saints won 4-2 in a penalty shoot out after extra-time as the sides were locked together at 2-2 after extra-time.

Connor Bird forced a fine save from Hay ‘keeper, Steve Jones before The Saints took the lead on 20 minutes with Rob Sneddon crossing for Matt James to score. Knighton hit back immediately with Bird providing the cross for Sam Wiliams to equalise.

That was how it remained until extra-time when Danny Ives bundled the bal in to put Knighton in front aftyer mark Jones had seen his effort blocked. Hay however dug deep and with just four minutes remaining forced the penalty shoot out. Matt Croose won the header from Brendan Hackett’s corner and Adie Lawford somehow managed to back heal the ball into the top corner.

Knighton went first in the penalties with Connor Bird and Mark Jones both successful. Sam Williams missed with The Robins’ third spot-kick and Gareth Mansell then saw his effort saved by Steve Jones. Hay kept their nerve with Rob Sneddon, Brendan Hackett, Jack Biggs and Jordan Baker all on target to earn The Saints a Final meeting with either Carno or League Champions, Penrhyncoch.

Already though to the Finals of both the Radnorshire Cup and Presteigne Otway Cup, Hay were aiming to make it four on Tuesday when they were due to meet Carno in a Central Wales Challenge Cup semi-final at Rhayader. For Knighton it ended a disappointing week with The Robins having narrowly missed out on the Spar first division title the previous Saturday.
