HAY St Marys tasted defeat for the first time this season in the Spar Mid Wales League first division after being on the wrong end of a 5-4 thriller against visiting Carno.
Kevin Jones had given The Saints the lead but a 17 minute hat-trick from Peter Rees saw Carno into the driving seat. Jones netted his second before half-time and Josh Wisniewski levelled the scores.
Brendan Hackett put Hay ahead as they looked to have completed a remarkable fightback but debutant, Richie Evans equalised for Carno before Rees grabbed a last minute winner to take his tally to four for the day.
Hay had been held to a goalless draw by Radnor Valley in midweek. Radnor made the better start and deservedly led when Joey Price latched on to a through ball. Steve Morgan equalised before Hay who had the better of the second half but Radnor defended very well.
Radnor Valley also lost for the first tie on Saturday when their much depleted side fell to a 3-1 defeat at Bow Street.
Rhayader Town are now the only unbeaten side in the division although they dropped their first points in a 1-1 draw at Aberaeron.
Town were unfortunate not to be ahead at the break having had strong penalty appeals turned down as well as hitting the woodwork through Mark Davies. Gareth Severs put Aberaeron in front in the second half but Dane Griffiths levelled.
Knighton Town have got their season up and running and notched a 2-1 home success over Carno last Tuesday night.
Mark Jones gave The Robins the lead with Knighton’s first goal of the season just before half-time and Sam Wiliams added a second on the hour. Carno were handed something of a lifeline when assistant manager, Lee Sutton bundled a free-kick into his own net but Knighton were not going to surrender their first points of the term.
Knighton went on to beat Machynlleth 4-1 at home despite the visitors taking an early lead. Mark Jones equalised when he powered home a header from Robbie Steele’s cross and player-manager, Adam Worton took The Robins ahead with a superb 30 yard strike.
Danny Ives headed home a Worton cross to extend the lead and Chris Roff hooked in a fourth before half-time following Worton’s free-kick.
Adie Jones and Steele both hit the woodwork in the second half but there was no addition to the scoreline.
Llandrindod Wells eased to a 4-0 win against Llanidloes Town last Wednesday night. The scoreline possible flattered Llandrindod to some extend with Ryan Sims netting in the first half and Shaun Nicholls, Jeff Jones and Robbie Nicholls in the second.
Llandrindod went on to draw 2-2 at home against Llanrhaeadr and will be a little disappointed having led 2-0. An early penalty from Johnny Williams, after Ryan Sims was brought down, and a second half strike from Shaun Nicholls saw Llandrindod go two goals clear.
Llanrhaeadr had seen much of the play and Iwan Matjthews clawed one back before Iain Edmunds tied the scores from the penalty spot with five minutes remaining.
