Llandrindod Wells can boast an interest on the world stage next month, following the call-up of Maddie Goodman.

19-year-old Maddie is the granddaughter of locals Jim and Doreen Rofers and is hoping to make an impression at the 2022 Women’s FIH Hockey Junior World Cup, after her call-up to the Welsh team.

The tournament is set to be held in Potchefstroom, South Africa from April 2-13.

Maddie is one of the 20-strong Welsh squad who will open their campaign against India on April 2, before taking on Malaysia and Germany to decide who tops Pool D.

Maddie said: “I have played premiership hockey since I was 15 years old. Firstly, with Bowdon Hightown in Manchester where I played alongside Wales captain, Sian French, and more recently at Loughborough University. When Sian saw that I had been scoring goals with Loughborough University she recommended I trial with Wales.”

As a junior, Maddie has played for England Hockey, but her older sister, Gaby, also represented Wales at Under 18 and 16 level.

She added: “I am excited to represent Wales on the world stage. Regular visits to Mid-Wales are very much part of my heritage and my mother has always insisted that we support Wales in the rugby and football. I can’t wait to get to South Africa and be able to represent Wales.”
