SCHOOLBOY Brychan Price-Davies took two gold medals at the senior Welsh Athletics Championships - and competed against a female world medalist.

The 17-year-old Brecon Athletics Club member competed next to Jamaica’s world 400m hurdles bronze medalist Ristananna Tracey who was running as a guest at the Welsh championships in Cardiff last Saturday, July 14.

As no women had entered the Welsh Championships 26-year-old Tracey ran, over the lower hurdles, at the same time as the senior men’s race.

Gwernyfed High School student Price-Davies, had already won his main event, the 2000m steeplechase, and entered the one lap hurdles event to improve his technique. His time of 60.41 was good enough for the Welsh title as well as the two male athletes who finished ahead of him, and Tracey, were not Welsh and therefore not eligible for the championship title.

Despite the fact Tracey beat him to the finish with a time of 56.84 he revealed running with the 2017 World Championship medalist and Rio 2016 Olympic finalist was an inspiration,

He said: "I was inspired by her and I admire how hard she works. I’d love to be British champion at some point."

The Glasbury athlete said the race, at the Cardiff International Sports Campus, would prove to be a memorable experience: "

It was quite intimidating, especially as there were only a few of us in the race."

The 17 year old said he was happy with the personal best he achieved for the 2000 meter steeplechase and said:" I really wanted to win, and beat my previous records."

Price-Davies, who is coached by Brecon AC stalwart Derek Osborne, trains up to six times a week, but always prioritises his education: "It’s very flexible training but school work always goes first."

The championships have proved a great end to the Glasbury teenager’s track season, and he will now begin training for the cross country season that starts in two months.
