THE Brecon Rotary/Brecon AC 3,4,5 mile road series leapt into action with a big turnout of 125 runners in the opening three mile race.
Despite the promise of rain, the bad weather held off and once again the runners enjoyed a competitive but friendly evening.
While the majority of runners were again from South Powys there were significant showings from Aberdare AAC, Parc Bryn Bach and Merthyr as well as from Builth, Rhayader and Hay.
As is usual, the 1.5 mile fun run preceded the main event and on this occasion there was a record turnout of 44 young athletes. With times ranging from eight to 18 minutes, it was truly a case of a mixture of aspiring athletes and those just toeing the line for the first time in their fledgling career.
First home was Lloyd Jones of Rhydawaun, Aberdare, in 8.04 with first girl Tiegan Ward the next finisher in 8.28. The second boy to finish was Jack Organ in 8.30 while Lili Jones was second girl in 8.41. All of the finishers received medals and the top two male/female also took home a confectionary prize.
The three mile race was a 1,2,3 smash and grab raid from the Aberdare team of Adam Bell (15.22), Daniel Bodman (15.37) and M40 Richard Gardner (15.50). Builth AC’s Tim Iveson was fourth in 16.18 while M50 Austin Davies was fifth in 17.05.
The first U20 was Tom Wood of Christ College in eighth place (17.35), a feat equalled by his younger sister Beth who placed 41st overall in 21.13. The first senior lady finisher was again local Llanfrynach ultra mountain runner Katie Roby who was 19 overall in 19.13.
