WRU DIVISION 2 WEST CENTRAL C
Ystradgynlais 0 Builth Wells 18
YSTRADGYNLAIS hosted Builth Wells in the first Breconshire derby match of the season but it was the Bulls celebrating at full time.
Both sides had recorded impressive wins in their opening games the previous weekend to set up this intriguing fixture between two clubs with impressive histories and have been acknowledged as settings standards for the county.
But the first half at the Welfare Ground was one of missed opportunities for both sides.
Builth’s line out which, had worked so effectively the previous Saturday, lost its form with Ystrad able to disrupted it and steal ball. The Bulls scrum was completely dominant but the team was unable to take advantage and squandered numerous opportunities to score.
Though the home side enjoyed good possession they ran into a strong Builth defence which would not break and it was the visitors who opened the scoring when fly half Dan Davies slotted over a penalty late in the first half.
Half time adjustments saw Builth’s line out restored to working order and centre Tom Samuel benefitted to make numerous breaks.
A great attacking kick from Bulls fullback Harry Jenkinson resulted in a line out at which the Bulls secured clean ball and a strong drive from the pack saw hooker Ben Pugh touching down for the first try which went unconverted.
Davies added a further three points however when Builth dominance at the scrum, and the weary legs of the home side, came into play which resulted in the referee awarding a penalty against the home pack.
The Bulls started to play their best rugby of the match with the back three of Jenkinson, Aled Jones and Rhys Lewis attacking at every opportunity.
One of these penetrating attacks led to the Bulls being awarded an attacking line out which resulted in second row Lucas Evans charging for the line bouncing two Ystrad defenders off to score a well dissevered try. Davies added the extras.
This turned out to be the last score of the game with the referee blowing up for full time shortly after restart.
Rob Lloyd, backs coach for Builth, said: “Again I am very pleased with our defence and fitness. After a very frustrating first half we showed great control in the second to get the win against a very strong Ystrad team.”
Both Breconshire sides face the league leaders this weekend, with fixtures against Resolven and Birchgrove who are joint top. An extra bonus point each from their two opening fixtures mean the two sides enjoy a point advantage over Builth and Portchawl who have also won their opening two games.
Builth play Resolven while Ystradgynlais are in action under the Friday night lights with their game at home to Birchgrove kicking off at 7.15pm at the Welfare Ground on September 14.
