Crickhowell RFC 37 Usk 2nds 0

ON a hastily re-arranged game Crickhowell welcomed Usk 2nds to a friendly at Parc Broyd last Saturday.

Lewys Cooke was first to break the deadlock after half an hour with a typical scrum-half’s try with a quick gather and dart around to score in the corner. Shortly afterwards, outside-half Tom Keane looped around and the ball was passed to full-back Kieron Llewllyn who ran in in the opposite corner.

Crickhowell’s task was made a little easier when two Usk players were yellow carded in quick succession. The Parc Broyd outfit took full advantage and it was again Tom Keane who kicked over the top from a penalty, gathered his own ball and crossed the whitewash near the posts.

The tries were unconverted and saw the half-time score at 15-0.

Early in the second half Usk again had a player yellow carded and from the resultant penalty kick to the corner, the hard-working Danny Davies gathered the ball and powered his way over the line.

Then it was Crickhowell’s turn to receive a yellow card but undeterred coach Gareth Bowen, who had came on as a replacement, was able to secure another try. Not long afterwards, it was another replacement, Graham Simpson who received the ball and weaved his way through his opponents to score his first try for the club.

To round off the tries, it was again the turn of the speedy Harry Summers to finish off a smart move. Connor Stephens finished off the game with the only conversion of the match.

The game was sponsored by the old boys of the club, who turned out in force to support the new wave of players and created a memorable occasion.

Organiser Mark Cule, the club’s new team manager said: "It was a tremendous turnout with players from all eras including some original founding members of the club. It was a fantastic day and thanks are due to Barry Sandilands, Gareth Rowe from the Dragon Inn, Bryan Birch, Gareth Parfitt and the Britannia Inn for hosting us."
