A LLANDOVERY College pupil has been selected to join the inaugural Welsh Rugby Union Youth Board.

Cameron Petrie, who has been a pupil at Llandovery College for the past six years, fought off the competition and was picked as part of the 15 place board.

The standard of applications from across Wales was high and for the selection process, Cameron had to submit a two minute video outlining his views on Welsh rugby for 16-21-year-olds and specifically the increasing trend for players in this age bracket to leave the sport.

Cameron’s passion and enthusiasm for rugby has deepened and he was fortunate enough to rub shoulders with and be inspired by George North during his time at the College; he was also a member of the College’s U15s team that toured Ireland, played for the second XV in year 11 and now plays on the wing for the College’s first XV.

Cameron praised the College’s coaching team led by Iestyn Thomas, the sports facilities and the opportunities the College afforded players to compete not only against teams in the UK but to travel overseas for competitions in countries such as Abu Dhabi and China.

Iestyn Thomas head of rugby at Llandovery College said: "For a young man Cameron is extremely perceptive and understands the politics which often go on behind the scenes. He will be able to express views clearly and concisely. This is a wonderful stepping stone for an intelligent and articulate young man who is passionate about his rugby."
