THESE two teams had met met each other since Llandrindod left the Mid Wales Leagues and were admitted to the WRU Division, League Division 3 East Central B.

In the event, this match showed how much Aberystwyth University, a.k.a the Students, and formerly known as University College Wales, have progressed in the interim. Not that this was a one-sided event with the Students running amok.

Far from it; the match was a keenly contested event, well worthy of the large crowd who gathered to watch the jewel of the Mid Wales District Rugby Union’s ’Finals’ Day’ held at Llanidloes RFC last weekend.

Llandrindod kicked off, but too short, and the ensuing play resulted in a successful penalty kick for the Students, but following the restart, Llandrindod’s forwards came to life and powered their way in to the Student’s territory, led by Dan Oakle.

Llandrindod’s Jonny Davies took full advantage of the Student’s temporary discomfort to use his strength to score an unconverted try.

This advantage was really too good to last and a penalty, and then a try, gave the Student’s a six point advantage in to the second half, but not before a number of indiscretions resulted in the showing of cards to both sides.

The second half kicked off with Llandrindod, through their terrier-like scrum half, Dale Wilson, surprising the Students with his penetration and then, in partnership with the ever- alert Danny Davies, led assaults to the student’s line but were held up short of territory.

Eventually, though, the livelier Students prevailed on the result of this tense game to touch down for a converted try. In the final quarter of this encounter Llandrindod pressed hard to make an impact on the scoreline, led by Davies and the forwards, but their efforts were in vain as the referee’s whistle closed an exciting encounter, and the Mid Wales Cup justifiably awarded to Aberystwyth University .
