Saturday saw a top-of-the-table clash at Parc Broyd as Crickhowell Rugby hosted leaders Crumlin, writes Mal Powell.
Crickhowell 15 - Crumlin 10
Despite the atrocious weather, a good crowd of spectators from both teams turned up to support.
Knock-ons were a frequent feature of the game as the rain made the ball difficult to control.
The teams were quite evenly matched though the home team had the upper hand at many of the scrums.
Crickhowell took the lead after exerting pressure on the Crumlin line, with captain Lewis Logan getting the ball down and Lewis Evans converting.
Crumlin fought back and a long-range kick took the play into the Crickhowell 22. The home team’s defence was strong and kept the opposing forwards out until the ball was spun wide and one of Crumlin’s speedy backs found a gap and drew level.
The visitors added three points with a penalty a short while later.
The referee ordered the teams back to the changing room to keep warm after Crickhowell’s Matthew Reynolds suffered a nasty broken leg following a surge down the wing. Thanks to the support of offficials and supporters, the game was able to continue after 20 minutes.
The visitors kept their lead at half-time and the second-half saw both teams giving their all, tackling hard and striving to gain dominance.
It was again Lewis Logan who gained Crick’s second try after a strong scrummage took them to the Crumlin line and sustained forward power eventually pushed the defenders back.
With just a two-point lead, Crick’s defence was was once again put to the test but proved resilient. A penalty on the edge of the Crumlin 22 was slotted over by Lewis Evans, leaving the final score reading 15-10.
Both clubs now each have 25 points but Crumlin have a game in hand.
With a reported eight hours before an ambulance could attend, the club would like to thank everyone who helped with the injury. In particular, Celia Morris for her expertise and ex-coach John Nash, who stepped up to transport the injured Matt Reynolds to the Grange Hospital.
The club wishes Matt a speedy recovery and would also like to send best wishes to supporter David “Chalky” White, who is currently in hospital.
Thanks, too, go to the game’s sponsor, David Taylor Garages, and Ken and Tracey Birch of the Corn Exchange, Gilwern for their after-match hospitality.
Next Saturday, the club welcome league rivals Hollybush to the Parc.
