Defeat to South Africa has ended Welsh hopes of a medal in women’s hockey at the Commonwealth Games.

A win for Wales would have meant they, India and England would all have won two games heading into the final round of matches.

But two goals, either side of half time, saw South Africa take the victory meaning Wales cannot now catch India or England, who defeated Malaysia 3-0 in their final group game, to win the pool.

India next play South Africa, knowing a victory will secure them second place, though the Africans, who drew with Malaysia, know a second victory would move them into second place above India.

Wales face winless Malaysia at 12.30 am UK time on Wednesday, April 11 with the games for the minor places, against the bottom four sides from pool B, due to take place on Thursday and Friday.

Knighton’s Phoebe Richards, who has impressed in attack for Wales, was given a green card, two minute suspension just before the 50 minute mark.

Candice Manuel opened the scoring for South Africa on 24 minutes and Jade Mayne added the second goal on 40 minutes.

Delyth Thomas, of Llanfihangel Nant Bran, again saw action from the substitutes bench.
