The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games have opened and Wales will be looking to continue its proud record of success at the championships.
Among the more than 200-strong Welsh team are seven athletes from Brecon and Radnorshire competing in events ranging from athletics to bowls.
Action gets underway early on Thursday, April 5 in Australia but as the country is nine hours ahead of the UK lots of action will be taking place overnight with coverage available on BBC channels throughout the night and during the day.
Among the first Powys athletes likely to compete are hockey pair Phoebe Richards and Delyth Thomas. The Welsh women’s team are in a group containing India, South Africa, Malaysia and England.
Tomi Lewis, from Three Cocks, is a member of the Welsh rugby sevens side at the games and they face Fiji, Uganda and Sri Lanka in their group.
In athletics 1500m runner Tom Marshall, from Rhayader, and para sprinter Morgan Jones, from Newbridge-on-Wye, will be flying the flag for Radnorshire.
The county is also well represented on the bowling green. Emma Woodcock, who is originally from Knighton, is part of Ladies Triples team while Jess Sims, from Llandrindod, is competing in the Women’s Pairs with Laura Daniels. The pair won the world championship in 2016.
In para bowls Pauline Wilson, from Builth Wells, is competing in the open triples event.
The Commonwealth Games bring more than 4,000 athletes from 71 nations, from the former British Empire, together to compete across 12 days of competition. As well as giving Wales and the other UK home nations the chance to compete under their own flags at a major games the championships allow countries, including some small Pacific islands, that aren’t independent states to be represented on the world stage in events ranging from shooting to swimming and gymnastics and boxing.
This year’s games also features netball and basketball and even beach volleyball.
