The final weekend of the track and field season has produced a few more fantastic performances from Brecon Atheltics Club athletes.

There was a spectacular first Welsh title for 15-year-old Tristan Cumberland in the Welsh Aquathlon Championship at Barry Island.

Second out of the water after a 750m open water swim around Whitmore Bay, Tristan stormed around the 5km run to win by over three minutes from the second placed athlete. There were 75 finishers in total of all ages.

The 2021 event was originally due to take place at the Monmouth Aquathlon on July 4, but with the easing of restrictions being delayed, it was agreed between all parties that it was better to reposition this year’s event to allow further ease of restrictions.

Further successes for Brecon athletes were enjoyed by two of the club’s U17 athletes made their international debuts for Welsh Schools in the Schools International Athletics Board home international in Derby.

First out of the blocks was Dan Ricketts in the 400m hurdles. Dan only took up this event in late July, with this being just his fourth race. As probably the only lower year U17 in the event Dan can be very pleased with his personal best of 61.88 and an evenly-paced race.

In an added piece of excitement the race winner broke the all-time event best for this international by running an outstanding low end 52 seconds.

John Bennett had been nursing an achilles issue for weeks before this competition and the lack of training had undoubtedly taken the edge off his performance.

However, the extra adrenaline and pride of being in the national vest helped John to a respectable 1.72m high jump and a 15.18 sec performance in the 100m hurdles that wasn’t far off his personal best. Both lads did themselves, their families and their club proud.

This weekend Ruby Herdman and Joe Edwards will represent Wales in the London Mini Marathon.

13-year-old Ruby warmed up for this by recording a strong 21.17 for 13th place out of 119 in The Groe Parkrun.
