A Shakespeare classic will be brought outdoors this summer as A Midsummer Night’s Dream is staged in the grounds of St Cynog’s Church, Merthyr Cynog.

The open-air production will see audiences follow the action around the churchyard as characters appear among them in this fast and funny promenade performance.

The production, taking place on Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, is being directed by Aileen Gonsalves, who has previously worked at the Royal Shakespeare Company, with design by Will Hargreaves, who has more than 30 years’ experience in theatre.

The church grounds will become part of the performance, with the surrounding trees, landscape and natural materials incorporated into the set and handcrafted costumes.

Director Aileen Gonsalves said: “A Midsummer Night’s Dream feels like it was written for nights like this.

“To bring this play to St Cynog, as the sun sets, with the audience close to the action, is exactly what Shakespeare intended. We’re creating something joyful, a little mischievous, and very unique.”

Designer Will Hargreaves said: “Designing for outdoors is all about responding to a specific location.

“It’s a real privilege to bring my experience to this beautiful community setting. Expect fairies in the yew trees!”

Reverend Richard Wootten of St Cynog Church said the production would build on the church’s long history as a place where people gather.

He said: “St Cynog has been a place of gathering and story for centuries.

“To welcome Shakespeare into our grounds is a wonderful way to bring people together, to celebrate community, creativity and the beauty of where we live.

“We’re delighted to open our doors - and our grounds - to theatre in this way.”

Performances take place at 7pm on Saturday, August 15, with further performances at 3pm and 7pm on Sunday, August 16.

The Sunday matinee performance will include a free fairy workshop for children (1:30pm - 2:30pm), who will have the chance to create fairy wings and take part in the production.

Audience members are advised to bring blankets and camping chairs as the venue is outdoors. A bar and refreshments will also be available.
