A PENYCAE badminton player who won gold at last year’s Special Olympics, has been recognised for his sporting achievement.

Lloyd Crawley was presented with a Silver Kite Award by the Chairman of Powys County Council, Cllr Paul Ashton, in honour and recognition of representing Great Britain at the Special Olympics.

The former Ysgol Penmaes student travelled over 5,000 miles to take part in the games, which were held in Los Angeles in July 2015 and came back with a gold medal after winning the men’s singles. He also won silver in the men’s doubles.

Lloyd, who has learning disabilities and also suffers with dyspraxia, a condition which affects co-ordination and balance, started playing badminton after being encouraged by Bev Tucker, the Sports Development Officer for Powys to try different sports.
