TWO bikers have added a memorial stone and bench to the Brecon Peace Gardens to remember those who died during the Falklands War, which ended 35 years ago in June.
Drew and Jules Hore, who run a stall in Brecon Market, are behind the memorial, which is dedicated to the 258 people, including 253 British troops and three civilians, who died in the 1982 war.
The stone and bench were put in place with help from project manager Robert Hunt from Kier, the construction group which is also working on Brecknock Museum, and two of his operatives. They will be laying the final paving stones, finishing the edging and building planters for the memorial area which Drew and Jules will be filling with donated plants.
Jules, who served in the Queen Alexandra’s Nursing Corps during the Falklands War, said: “We chose the Peace Gardens because the area had fallen into disrepair after it was put in and it just seemed like an appropriate place to put the memorial – it was actually the Guildhall who suggested it.”
Drew and Jules have also said they are considering replacing the other benches in the Peace Gardens, which are rotten and falling apart, with poppy-themed benches.
