A volunteer group that has helped transform Ystradgynlais over the past decade is marking its 10th anniversary with a year of community events this year.

Blodau Ystradgynlais, a team of local volunteers, has spent 10 years creating floral displays, maintaining public spaces and improving the town’s appearance.

To celebrate, the group has lined up a programme of events starting with Tea and Tunes on the Lawn on Saturday, June 6, offering visitors an afternoon of music and refreshments at Maesycwm Lawn (2:30pm-5:30pm).

This will be followed by the return of the Open Gardens event on Saturday, June 27 (10:30am-5pm), featuring new gardens and a new scarecrow trail.

In the autumn, the group will host its first horticultural plant and produce show on Saturday, September 19 (12pm-4pm) at St Cynog’s Church Hall.

The anniversary year continues in October with a talk by TV gardener Sue Kent.

There will also be a raffle for a painting by Welsh artist Beatrice Williams, left to the group by the late Dr Ruth Long, a long-time supporter and friend of the group.

A spokesperson for Blodau Ystradgynlais said: “Reaching our 10 anniversary is a wonderful achievement for everyone who has supported us over the years. Our volunteers have given countless hours to helping make Ystradgynlais a place we can all be proud of.

“This year’s programme reflects everything that makes our community special. From gardens and flowers to music, family activities, traditional horticulture and a visit from Sue Kent, we hope residents and visitors alike will join us in celebrating ten years of Blodau Ystradgynlais.

“We are also honoured to be able to raffle a beautiful Beatrice Williams painting gifted to us through the generosity of the late Dr Ruth Long, whose support of our work will always be remembered.”
