LLANDRINDOD Wells Hospital has been named a winner in the Welsh Government's draft budget - but county councils including Powys will lose out. The Welsh Government announced its draft 2015/16 budget and that it had secured a deal with the Welsh Liberal Democrats, led by Brecon and Radnorshire AM Kirsty Williams, to ensure it passes through the Assembly - where the Labour administration is one vote short of an overall majority. Spending on the NHS will be boosted but the Welsh Government is again cutting the amount of money it gives to county councils. Unitary authorities are expecting cuts of up to 4.5 per cent to their budgets from next April. Due to cuts imposed by the Westminster Government the Welsh Government's budget will shrink from £15.3 billion to £15.1 billion next year. The £5.3 million to spent at Llandrindod Wells County War Memorial Hospital will fund a refurbishment allowing it to carry out additional day surgeries - saving patients from having to travel to Hereford. However Powys County Council is bracing itself for further cuts - having already cut its spending by £17.5 million this year. It has already warned it is likely to have to cut spending by at least £15 million next year and save £70 million by 2020. A series of meetings are currently being held across the county by the county council as its seeks the public's view on how it can achieve the savings - but it has warned it will become a smaller organisation, providing fewer services with less staff. Meanwhile the Powys Uncut campaign group, which aims to bring various bodies together to fight cuts to public services in the county, is holding public meetings in Brecon and Llandrindod Wells this month. The council's events are being held at Knighton Community Centre on Friday, October 3; Llandrindod Wells Pavilion on Monday, October 6 and Brecon's Elim Church on Wednesday, October 8. The drop-in sessions will run from 6pm to 8pm and there's no need to book beforehand. Information on attending the council's morning and afternoon workshops on the same dates is available from Melanie Hardwick on 01597 826160 or emailing [email protected]">[email protected]. Powys Uncut is holding meetings at Cefnllys School, Llandrindod Wells on Tuesday, October 14 and The Muse, Glamorgan Street, Brecon on Thursday, October 16. Both meetings start at 6.30pm.
