As we grow older, staying connected to other people becomes just as important as looking after our physical health. Research shows that around one in ten older adults worldwide report feeling lonely, while approximately one in four older adults experience social isolation. The consequences can be profound. Studies have found that social isolation is associated with around a 29% higher risk of premature death, while loneliness is associated with around a 26% higher risk. Together, these factors can have a significant impact on both physical and mental health, comparable to many other well-established health risk factors.
The encouraging news is that meaningful social connections, regular movement and taking part in enjoyable community activities can make a real difference. Remaining physically active, even through gentle exercise, helps maintain strength, balance and independence, while staying socially engaged has been shown to improve emotional wellbeing, confidence and overall quality of life. It isn't about running marathons or spending hours in the gym—it can be as simple as spending an afternoon laughing with friends, learning something new and feeling part of your community.
With this in mind, Silver Assist Homecare is hosting a Community Bowls Afternoon in partnership with Brecon Bowls Club as part of the Silver Assist Community Commitment. Through this commitment, Silver Assist funds and part-funds initiatives that positively enhance the wellbeing of clients and the wider community, helping people stay informed, remain active, reduce loneliness and create lasting friendships.
On 8TH September from 13:30 , everyone is warmly invited to Brecon Bowls Club for an afternoon of bowls, conversation and a complimentary barbecue. Whether you've played before or have never picked up a bowl in your life, you'll receive a warm welcome.
A Sport for Every Age and Ability
One of the biggest misconceptions about bowls is that you need to be particularly fit or athletic to enjoy it.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Brecon Bowls Club is home to members of all ages and abilities, many of whom continue enjoying the sport despite joint replacements, reduced mobility or simply the aches and pains that naturally come with getting older. With a few simple adaptations and plenty of encouragement, bowls remains an enjoyable way to stay active and connected.
Gordon – 96 Years Young

Gordon has been playing bowls for over 40 years and celebrates his 96th birthday this month. While he now uses a walking stick with a rubber plate to help his balance, he continues to enjoy both indoor and outdoor bowls. For Gordon, one of the greatest pleasures is not only remaining active but also enjoying the friendship and companionship that comes with being part of the club.
Kath – Staying Active After Two Hip Replacements

Kath is 73 years old and has undergone two hip replacements. She now uses a bowls lifter to help pick up her bowls from the green, allowing her to continue enjoying the game she loves. For Kath, bowls offers far more than gentle exercise—it's an opportunity to socialise, laugh and spend time with friends.
More Than a Game
This event is about much more than introducing people to bowls.
It's about bringing people together.
It's about demonstrating that growing older doesn't mean becoming isolated.
It's about showing that staying active doesn't have to involve strenuous exercise—it can simply mean spending an afternoon outdoors, enjoying fresh air, good conversation and a few friendly laughs.
Research consistently shows that people who remain socially connected and physically active are more likely to enjoy better emotional wellbeing, greater independence and an improved quality of life. Sometimes the smallest step—walking through the doors of a local club—can lead to new friendships and a renewed sense of purpose.
The partnership between Silver Assist Homecare and Brecon Bowls Club hopes to do exactly that.
Whether you're looking for a new hobby, have recently retired, have lost a loved one, or simply fancy meeting some friendly new faces, everyone is welcome.
What to Expect
The afternoon will include:
- A complimentary barbecue.
- The opportunity to meet the friendly members of Brecon Bowls Club.
