Police officers investigating a report of violent disorder in Pontypool last week are appealing for the whereabouts of a Blaenavon man to ‘assist’ with their enquiries.

40-year-old Anthony Paul Jones is believed to be of high interest to those working on the case, in which a group of men in Mill Street allegedly engaged in a violent brawl at around 7.15pm on Thursday August 8.

Police are also interested in finding a blue Ford Transit van, which they believe could have been involved in the incident and is missing its front lower nearside panel. The registration is MA23 FLC.

A 56-year-old man from Brecon, Anthony “Tony” Jones, sadly lost his life as a result of injuries sustained inn the incident. His family is being supported by specialist officers.

Senior investigating officer, Detective Superintendent Laura Bartley said, “We recognise that reports of this nature will cause concern in our communities, but our officers are working around the clock and conducting enquiries as part of this live investigation.”

Ten men - aged 31, 33, 34, 39, 40, 40, 45, 59, 61 and 73 - were arrested in connection with the disorder.Three men - aged 39, 45 and 61 - have since been released on bail. Seven men remain in police custody at this time as the investigation continues.
