Brecknock YFC has been crowned overall winners of Wales YFC competitions at this year’s Royal Welsh Show - marking a historic first-place finish for the county for the first time since 1988.

Members from across Brecknockshire delivered a string of impressive performances across all four days of the show in Llanelwedd, winning a host of individual and team titles that led to their well-deserved victory in the national contest.

From floral art and farm safety pitches to sheep judging and tug of war, Brecknock YFC members showcased the breadth of their talent, dedication and teamwork in a packed programme of competitions involving YFC members from across Wales.

In a message to members, the county federation said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to announce that Brecknock came out on top, winning the week overall for the first time in 37 years! With a host of fantastic individual and team results, your hard work and determination truly paid off. Congratulations to each and every one of you - we’re incredibly proud.”

Brecknock YFC’s success at the Royal Welsh was built on a string of strong results throughout the week, with members impressing across a broad spectrum of competitions.

The top three finishes for Brecknock across the four days are as follows:

On Monday, Caitlin, Carrie, Emily, Alys and Tilly from Builth Wells YFC secured 2nd place in the Federation Display, while Sian, Megan and Henry from Pontfaen YFC took 3rd place for their Scrapbook entry. There was a 1st place win for Sioned from Troedrhiwdalar YFC in the Under 21 Floral Art competition, and another 1st for Sennybridge YFC’s Libby, Darcy, Nia and Jack with their Farm Safety Project pitch. Sian also claimed 2nd in Solo Singing, helping Pontfaen YFC finish joint 2nd overall in the singing category.

Tuesday’s highlights included a 1st place in the Main Ring Display for Sennybridge YFC, while Emilee and Megan from Trecastle YFC won 1st in Cookery. Tomos from Erwood YFC placed 3rd in the Under 18 Welsh Pig Judging.

Wednesday brought more top spots, with Rhian from Pontfaen YFC claiming 1st in Under 28 Blue Faced Leicester Sheep Judging, and Niall winning 1st in the Chairs Challenge. Sennybridge YFC’s cruise ship entertainment group - Richard, Iestyn, Owain, Teleri, Ffion and Elin - came 3rd, while Brecknock YFC’s 2nd place in the 7s rugby and double 1st in the Men’s and Junior Tug of War helped secure 1st overall in Tug of War.

On Thursday, Louis and Finley from Llandefalle YFC came 3rd in Junior Woodwork, while Alys and Bronwen from Builth Wells YFC also placed 3rd in the Junior Generation Game. Sennybridge YFC continued their strong form with Reuben, Megan and Nia winning 1st in the “Promote a Local Attraction or Staycation” competition. Ruth from Pontfaen YFC added another podium finish with 3rd in Under 28 Holstein Cattle Judging.
