More than £3,000 is to be donated towards the Nepal flood disaster fund as a result of a collection in Brecon’s Bethel Square.

Brecon Rotary Club teamed up with the Brecon Dhampus Twinning Association to ask the public to give generously following such a terrible catastrophe.

The response was immediate. “People knew that hundreds of people had died and so many were missing,” said Hayley Ridge-Evans, a member of both organisations. “One man even put a £50 note into our collecting box.”

The team of collectors received more than £1,500 in notes and coins, by bank card and via the Rotary wishing well in Bethel Square. The Rotary Club has now agreed to match that amount, making a grand total of more than £3,000.

“The disaster was so horrendous that we thought it right to double the money raised,” said Carol Herbert, chair of Rotary’s International Committee.

The money is being paid into the relief fund set up by the Prime Minister of Nepal.

Brecon Rotary is continuing to invite the public to make further contributions via Rotary’s wishing well in Bethel Square or by contacting any member of the Rotary Club. Any further funds will also be paid directly to the relief fund.

The Brecon Dhampus Twinning Association will be holding two more events for the disaster relief effort – a charity night at Zeera’s restaurant on September 15 and a quiz night at The Foundry on September 28.
