The Royal Welsh Museum is calling on local residents to volunteer as a much-loved Second World War exhibition returns to Brecon this December.
Museum officials have confirmed that The Longest Yarn, a remarkable knitted and crocheted depiction of Britain during the Second World War, will be displayed throughout the month, offering visitors a unique chance to experience history through handcrafted scenes.
The exhibition takes audiences on a journey through some of the war’s most significant moments, beginning with the declaration of war in 1939 and continuing through key events, including D-Day, life on the home front and the celebrations that marked the end of the conflict in 1945. Featuring hundreds of detailed knitted figures and displays, the exhibition has captivated thousands of visitors across the country.
To help ensure the event runs smoothly, the museum is appealing for volunteer stewards to welcome visitors, provide information and help create a positive experience for everyone attending.
The recruitment drive extends beyond the exhibition itself. The museum is also looking to attract long-term volunteers to support its day-to-day work by greeting visitors, assisting with research projects and helping care for the museum’s collections.
Curator Amanda Rosewarne said volunteers play a vital role in the museum’s success.
“We are a small staff and so our volunteers are vital in keeping the museum open and thriving for future generations,” she said. “We have a wonderful team already, but we are keen to welcome some more enthusiastic people into the fold.
“Whether you have a passion for history, enjoy meeting new people, or simply want to give something back to your local community, we’d love to meet you.”
Anyone interested in learning more about volunteering opportunities is invited to attend a special information evening at the Royal Welsh Museum on Wednesday, October 21, from 6pm to 7pm, where prospective volunteers can meet the team and find out how they can get involved.
