Overhead electricity lines have been removed from the landscape around a popular hillfort overlooking Brecon.
National Grid Electricity Distribution and Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority have completed a project at Pen y Crug, involving the replacement of around 500 metres of overhead power lines with underground cables.
Five poles have also been removed along the route between Brecon and the hillfort, improving views from the site while maintaining the electricity supply to local homes and businesses.
The work was funded through an allowance provided by energy regulator Ofgem to bury existing power lines in National Parks and National Landscapes.
Christopher O'Brien, senior planning officer at the National Park Authority, said the work had made a noticeable difference to the area.
"If you walk up to Pen y Crug today, you'll immediately notice the difference. Removing the overhead line has visually opened up the hill and made an already brilliant walk even better," he said.
"When walking back towards Brecon, the views across the town, the Usk Valley, the Black Mountains and the Central Beacons are now uninterrupted."
He described it as a relatively small project which had delivered a significant improvement to the landscape.
Dai Roberts, head of operations for east Wales at National Grid Electricity Distribution, said the work had allowed the company to maintain a safe and reliable electricity supply while improving the setting of the historic site.
The project was developed jointly by the two organisations, which identified Pen y Crug as a location where removing overhead infrastructure would benefit the landscape.
The hillfort is one of the National Park's popular viewpoints, overlooking Brecon and offering views across the Usk Valley, the Black Mountains and the Central Beacons.
