A Welsh cob who helped a Brecon carriage driver rebuild her confidence after a life-changing diagnosis has been shortlisted for a national award.
Alfie, whose full name is Beechwood Bracken, is in the running for the Horse of a Lifetime Award at the 2026 Horse & Hound Awards.
The 24-year-old pony has been shortlisted alongside three other horses in the category, with the winner decided by a public vote.
Voting closes at 5pm on Friday, October 16, with the winners due to be announced at an awards ceremony in November.
Emily Ham and her family are now hoping people in Brecon and the surrounding area will get behind Alfie and help him win the accolade.
Emily was diagnosed with an incurable neurological disorder which affected her independence and confidence and left her unable to carriage drive for a period. During that time, Alfie became a source of comfort and support, helping Emily through some of her most difficult days.
When she was ready to return to competition, the Welsh cob helped her adapt to her disability and regain the confidence to compete again.
Together, they went on to represent Great Britain at two World Championships, winning two bronze medals.
Even at 24, Alfie continued to compete at the highest level, demonstrating what older ponies can achieve.
But for Emily, his importance goes far beyond their success in the sport. After 14 years together, Alfie has become her trusted partner and best friend, helping her regain a sense of independence and return to something she loves.
The Horse & Hound Awards celebrate achievements across the equestrian world, with the Horse of a Lifetime category recognising the special bond between horses and the people whose lives they have changed.
People can vote for Alfie online before the deadline.
